Mittera is looking for new talent! Find us at the University of Wisconsin-Stout Career Fair next week. Below, hear from Eric Kuhn, a Mittera sales representative and a UW-Stout alum.
My journey into the printing industry began when I was a sophomore in high school, when my passions for photography and videography began to develop. I took an interest in capturing moments and recreating them into various digital and physical formats. The Technical Education program at my school offered me the opportunity to pursue my interests further, from learning to use Adobe software to screen printing t-shirts to operating small one- and two-color Heidelberg presses. Maxing out the available graphics classes, I honed my skills and took an interest in the printing industry. With the encouragement and influence of some alumni, I chose to pursue a degree in Cross-Media Graphic Communications at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. My major exposed me to all sides of the industry: color management, estimating, post-press finishing, strategic marketing, and more.
Throughout my 4 years in school, I worked two separate internships totaling 1-year of industry experience. Both opportunities helped shape and provide direction for me. As I approached graduation, the need for young individuals passionate about printing became more evident. The career opportunities came knocking and I had to make some tough decisions. I couldn’t be more excited for where I’ve landed and where we’re headed.
Today, just five months after graduation, I’m a sales representative for Mittera. I made the move to Des Moines, Iowa to work out of the Urbandale location. It’s been nothing short of life changing. One thing I quickly learned about the print industry is that the roots run deep. The business is constantly evolving, but one thing that remains is the people and their passion for what they do. My favorite part about my job is having an opportunity to formulate relationships and be a resource for people. Having the chance to provide insight and new ideas, and truly help individuals or other companies accomplish and exceed their goals is what energizes me. I’m a part of a team that constantly pushes me to be better, is willing to invest time and knowledge into me, and will do whatever it takes to execute a project perfectly.
My advice to the young student looking to kick-start their career is to immerse yourself in whatever opportunities that are presented to you. Whether in the classroom or extracurricular activities, embrace the failures that come with these experiences and develop a portfolio of knowledge to take forth. Take advice from people who have accomplished the things you want and never sell yourself short. And lastly: NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. College is your chance to establish credibility and position yourself as an expert right out of the gate. You never know who you’ll meet, and you never know where it will take you.
